Case in Point

THE CHALLENGE THE RESPONSE THE OUTCOME

Following a decade of spectacular profits, a major European pharmaceutical company was beset by a series of major difficulties - all of them well documented in the international financial press - which led to the eventual resignation of the Group and Pharmaceutical Division Chairmen.

The new senior executive team recognized an urgent need to transform management practices in order to rebuild the spirit of the organization and its ability to compete.

Orion International was called in. Over a period of one year, the Orion consultant counseled a core of ten European general managers, individually and collectively. Through this process, a ten-point vision for European Operations was developed, debated, accepted, and implemented. The effect of this intervention was to heighten morale, increase confidence and create a renewed sense of common purpose. The team that had been established believed in itself and its ability to win. Staff members were empowered with greater responsibilities. There was a clear focus on key priorities. Communications improved measurably. The organization became more aggressive and confident in the market. According to the client liaison, "The spin-off from this process has been remarkable. First-line management teams have been rebuilt, with quality and the sense of purpose driven deep into each organization. What's more, these groups are now working synergistically with their sister companies. The effect has been profound and is reflected increasingly in the quality of programmes and the results achieved. The credit for this rests wholly with Orion International, whose dedication to the task was the critical element in the process of positive change."
